Named after a laid-back Northern California town, this restaurant successfully brings a comfortable West Coast vibe to the classic Manhattan neighborhood eatery. Here, diners find white tablecloths, simple wood chairs and an industrial wood-burning oven that turns out perfect thin-crust pizzas, and a menu of antipasti that has the old Italian favorites—bufala mozzarella, fried calamari—as well as innovative additions, like grilled Portuguese octopus seasoned with spicy mustard and smoked paprika. Ditto for the (house-made) pastas and main courses, which range from goat-cheese gnocchi to the namesake Chicken Petaluma, a chicken scaloppini spiced up with speck, sun-dried tomatoes and green peppercorn.
